Ideal solution for clinical research

The MediBrite, which is our CE-marked medical product, is the perfect fit for application in clinical research. It is the first portable European NIRS device certified according to Medical Device Regulation (EU) 2017/745. The MediBrite measures Infrared absorption changes in local tissue from up to 27 channels, which can be used for functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS). Designed for reliable, comfortable, and safe measurements, the MediBrite is completely portable, lightweight, and comes with advanced features to ensure good data quality.

Artinis Medical Systems received the ISO 13485:2016 certification for our quality management system in 2021, following from audit by the notified body Dekra.

Can be used in a variety of clinical applications and patients

The MediBrite offers a unique combination of light weight and portability, allowing perfectly for measurements during movement, e.g. walking, without restrictions of cable connection. This leads to enhanced application possibilities, for instance in rehabilitation studies or research including infants and children. With specifically designed optodes and features to quickly achieve good signal quality, set-up and preparation time can be kept to a minimum.

Easy to use and comfortable

The MediBrite is an advanced multi-channel device, that is still designed with quick and easy set-up in mind. The control unit weighs less than 200 g and can be attached to the patients in a variety of ways to ensure comfort and freedom to move during longer measurements. Optodes are available with flat tips to ensure comfortable and safe measurements in patients with sensitive skin. The device user interface is intuitive, allowing basic operations and giving indications on measurement and battery state.

Anywhere and on everyone

The MediBrite offers the possibility to measure from any desired cortical region, in neonatal, pediatric and adult patients. Due to its light weight and portability, the device cannot only be used during experiments that require to stay still, but also during movement. This makes it the perfect fit for use in less compliant patients. Flexible choice of optode templates guarantees perfect fitting measurements from any cortical region. The amount of channels can be increased to up to 54 when combining two MediBrites on one headcap, to achieve Dual Mode and cover larger areas of the brain.

with superior features

The MediBrite comes with superior features and options that ensure reliable signal quality regardless of measurement location, such as multi-power gain control to regulate light output, ambient light protection and high sampling rate from up to 75 Hz. It is possible to include two short separation channels to measure from superficial tissue layers, which can be used to further improve signal quality.

Available in two different variants

MediBrite C

The MediBrite C comes with optodes that can be placed in three different heights to enable measurements from any cortical region. The optode height can be easily adjusted to optimize skin contact. This ensures comfortable and safe measurements from any cortical brain area of your choosing while still maintaining high signal quality.

MediBrite S

The MediBrite S is designed for sensitive subjects, such as infants and the elderly. It includes optodes with flat tips and can be used with holders made out of soft material. This ensures high comfort even during long measurements. The optode cables are extended to increase the options of placing the control unit, other than on the head.

What is Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy?

The MediBrite comes with two different types of optodes: transmitters and receivers. The transmitter emits light in two different wavelengths, for which biological tissue is relatively transparent. The transmitted light is mainly absorbed by two chromophores: oxygenated hemoglobin (O2Hb), which carries oxygen, and deoxygenated hemoglobin (HHb). The receiver detects the changes in light absorption, which are dependent on the amount of oxygen in the blood.

In fNIRS, these changes in light absorption can be used to calculate relative concentration changes in O2Hb and HHb in brain tissue, using the modified Lambert-Beer-Law (mLBL). When a certain brain region gets active, a mechanism called neurovascular coupling is induced, leading to an increase in O2Hb and slight decrease in HHb usually about 5-10 sec after activation. fNIRS can give information about localized brain activity in any cortical brain region, by measuring those changes.

Why use fNIRS in clinical research?

fNIRS offers various advantages over other neuroimaging technologies (e.g. fMRI), making it a suitable technique to be used in clinical settings, as it is:

  • Non-invasive

  • Portable

  • Less prone to movement artifacts

  • Easy to use with fast set-up time

  • Affordable

fNIRS in Clinical Setting – application area

Due to its portability and ease of use, fNIRS can be used in a variety of different clinical applications, including: Psychiatry, Neurology, Rehabilitation, Geriatrics, Pediatrics, and Neonatology.

fNIRS is currently used in various ways and patient groups in clinical research: It is applied to investigate potential differences in brain activity of diseased and healthy population. Furthermore, its potential as a diagnostic tool in for instance psychiatric and neurological disorders is assessed.

Additionally, fNIRS is used to determine effects of different therapy and rehabilitation strategies by studying neural activity pre-, post-, and during interventions.

fNIRS can be combined with other technologies, for instance EEG, or brain stimulation (TMS, tES), to achieve a complete and direct picture of brain behavior.
