Introduction to functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy
As the use of Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy continues to grow each year, we are excited to offer our expertise to ensure that everyone can use this equipment to its full potential. In light of this, we have developed a one-day introductory course on fNIRS that is open to anyone interested in Near Infrared Spectroscopy, including students, postgraduates, researchers, new users, and other professionals. All fNIRS enthusiasts are welcome!
Please note this is an on-site course and online participation is not possible.
LOCATION & SCHEDULEThis introduction course will be held prior to the ISENS 2026 conference, on Thursday the 16th of July 2026 at the University College London.
PROGRAMThe fNIRS introduction course will be divided into two different parts:
Theoretical background — learn more about:
The theory and technology behind fNIRS
fNIRS applications in the fields of neuroscience, psychology, and sports science
Applicable experimental setup and analysis methods
Practical hands-on session with Artinis & NIRx devices and a walkthrough of Brite Connect and Aurora software: Put the acquired theoretical knowledge into practice and perform different fNIRS experiments from set-up to simple data analysis.
PRACTICAL INFORMATIONAttendance to the course is £30 per participant, lunch included.
This fNIRS introduction course has limited spots for 25 participants. Therefore, we operate on a ‘first come, first served’ policy.

What do I need to prepare?
Having a laptop and notebook will make the introduction course a better experience. Of course, if you have any questions, it helps to write them down beforehand so they become better defined and you won’t forget to ask them.
What is the difference between the NIRS Introduction Course and ARTscientific?
The fNIRS introduction course is meant to learn more about the theory and practice of fNIRS. ARTScientific is longer and focuses more on exchange with other fNIRS experienced scientists.
