fNIRS headcaps
At Artinis we designed and developed our own head-caps with a clean look, ergonomic fit, and printed optode marks. The caps show major improvements over the other commonly used NIRS and EEG head-caps.
In comparison to the standard caps, it covers the entire scalp and prefrontal cortex, provides equally divided pressure, freedom of head movement for the subject and absorbs external light due to its fabric. You are able to create your own custom optode template with the delivered tool.
All head-caps show printed optode marks and 10/20 system indications:
Fpz, Fpz1, Fpz2, Fz, F3, F4, F7, F8, Cz, C3, C4, T3, T4, T5, T6, Pz, P3, P4, Oz, O1, O2.

Choosing the perfect headcap for your research
We want our headcaps to fit your study! In order to deliver the best headcap for you, we need to know:
The sizing of your desired headcaps
If you need
standard hole placement: headcap with standard holes for the transmitters & receivers.; or
custom hole placement: a headcap with print only & a toolkit so you can make holes wherever you like.
If you are not sure about the hole placement or sizing, please ask us, tell us about your research, and we can help you choose the best option.
At Artinis, we designed and developed our own headcaps. These headcaps show major improvements over the ones commonly used for NIRS and EEG. Our headcap has an ergonomic fit that provides equally divided pressure, and it covers the entire scalp, including full frontal and occipital cortex. The fabric absorbs external light and is sturdier, so the optodes will not move.
Our headcap comes in multiple sizes: for adults and for children from 2 years onwards, from XS to XL. All headcaps have printed indicators for the EEG 10/20 system as well as NIRS optode marks in a grid of ~30 mm. The grids‘ marks are in a slightly different location across headcap sizes, to maintain the ~30 mm distance between marks. We recommend using the 30mm distance guards to ensure such distance.
You can choose between caps with or without pre-made holes. In a cap without holes, you can make the holes yourself using a punching toolkit (read the following section). This way, you have complete freedom in where to place the optodes. You can choose the most optimal location for your template and keep it consistent across all headcap sizes. Especially if you want to combine NIRS with EEG we would recommend this.
The pre-made holes are made using the 30 mm grid. With pre-made holes, we can deliver our NIRS devices in a plug-and-play manner and the initial setup time is faster, but the layout per size will differ.
Headcap options:
Headcap with holes
Headcap with no (premade) holes
Available sizes:
Written as [Size name (head circumference in cm)]
XXS (49-51 cm)
XS (51-53 cm)
S (53-55 cm)
M (55-57 cm)
L (57-59 cm)
XL (59-61 cm)
Customize your headcap template
With our headcap without pre-made holes, you have the flexibility to create your own custom layout using the included punching toolkit. This allows you to choose the optimal locations for your optodes, ensuring consistency across all headcap sizes and tailoring the setup to your study's specific needs.
The punching toolkit is included in your fNIRS package purchase. For a step-by-step guide, watch our short video on how to punch holes on the Artinis fNIRS headcap.
Note: We advise against punching additional holes too close to existing ones, as this may compromise the headcap's durability and structure.
fNIRS optode holders
We offer different types of optode holders that fit your needs.
Optode holder pinch
Holder for single optode that can be used in our new neoprene headcap. Attach the fiber to the holder by simply pinching it. Works with the new fibers.
Optode holder NIRS/EEG
Measures NIRS and EEG at the same location in a single holder on the OxyMon.
Optode holder classic
Holder for single optode that can be used with the OxyMon. You can attach the fiber to the holder with a screw.
Short channel holder
The holder has a minimized distance between the transmitter and receiver, resulting in an inter-optode distance of +/-10 mm. These short-separation channels will measure the extracerebral signal, which subtracts the hemodynamic response signal of the standard channels. This short channel holder can be implemented on the OctaMon and the Brite.
Brite optode holder
Applied on Brite and Octamon+, this optode holder has a 3-step mechanism; which enables the user to easily choose pressure load. The system allows you to easily aside the hair beneath the optode. The color yellow stands for transmitter and blue for receiver.
Distance Guards
Distance guards ensure a fixed maximum distance between a transmitter tip and to receiver tip on the skin. The corresponding distance of the distance guard is placed on the tab in millimeters.
